NWA Pride

NW Arkansas Pride

Northwest Arkansas Pride is hosted by NWA Equality. This is an annual event that celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community in the region.

It features a parade, live music, food vendors, and various activities and entertainment.

Local volunteers organize the event to promote acceptance, equality, and visibility for the LGBTQIA+ community in Northwest Arkansas.

Since 2006, it has grown over the years and now attracts tens of thousands of participants and spectators from across the region.

History of Pride in the United States.

June 28, 1969, when the Stonewall uprising occurred in New York City.

The Stonewall Inn was a popular gathering place for the LGBTQIA+ community, but the police routinely raided it. On that fateful night, members of the LGBTQIA+ community fought back against the police, sparking a series of protests and demonstrations that lasted for several days. The Stonewall uprising is widely considered a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, and it inspired the creation of many LGBTQIA+ organizations and advocacy groups across the country.

The first Pride march in the United States occurred on June 28, 1970, one year after the Stonewall uprising. The march, which was called the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, started at the Stonewall Inn and ended in Central Park. Since then, Pride events have been held in cities nationwide every year to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights. Today, Pride events are often held during June to commemorate the Stonewall uprising and celebrate Pride Month.

We honor the black and brown people who started Pride because they were at the forefront of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement and were pivotal in advancing the cause of LGBTQIA+ equality.

Without the contributions of black and brown LGBTQIA+ people, the LGBTQIA+ rights movement would not be where it is today. Black and brown LGBTQIA+ people continue to face discrimination and marginalization, both within the LGBTQIA+ community and in society at large. By honoring the black and brown people who started Pride, we acknowledge their leadership and ongoing contributions to the fight for LGBTQIA+ equality.

We also commit ourselves to continue working towards a world where all LGBTQIA+ people, regardless of their race or ethnicity, can live free from discrimination and oppression.

Representation Matters!

For LGBTQIA+ youth, participating in the Pride parade can be an empowering and validating experience.

It can provide them with a sense of community and belonging and offer a space where they can express themselves freely without fear of judgment or discrimination.

It can also help to raise awareness about LGBTQIA+ issues and promote acceptance and inclusivity.

Participating in the Pride parade can be a way to honor LGBTQIA+ history and celebrate the progress that has been made toward equality while acknowledging that there is still work to be done.

Going to Pride?

If you're a youth planning to attend Northwest Arkansas Pride, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Bring a friend: Attending events like this with a friend or two is always more fun. Not only will you have someone to talk to and share the experience with, but you'll also have someone to help keep you safe.

Know your limits: Pride events can be very exciting, but it's important to know your limits and be aware of your surroundings. Don't feel pressured to do anything that makes you uncomfortable, and always trust your gut instincts.

Stay with your group: If you're attending with a group of friends, be sure to stick together throughout the day. This will help ensure that everyone stays safe and accounted for.

Stay hydrated: Arkansas can get quite hot during the summer months, so be sure to bring plenty of water with you to stay hydrated throughout the day. You might also want to consider bringing a refillable water bottle to help reduce waste.

Dress comfortably: Pride events can be quite crowded, so you'll want to wear comfortable shoes and clothing that won't weigh you down. Remember, it's going to be a long day, so dress appropriately.

Be respectful of others: Pride events celebrate diversity and inclusivity, so respecting everyone you encounter is important. Be mindful of people's boundaries, and don't touch anyone without their permission.

Have fun: Most importantly, have fun! Northwest Arkansas Pride is a celebration of love and acceptance, so let loose and enjoy the festivities. But remember to be safe and responsible while having a good time.
